Philips Aertsz. KONINCK
Amsterdam 1619–Amsterdam 1688

Philips Koninck was born in Amsterdam on 5 November, 1619. He was chiefly known as a painter of portraits and contemporary life, but today his landscape are most admired. In 1629 he was the pupil of his elder brother, Jacob, in Rotterdam. He moved to Amsterdam, where, according to one source, he was a pupil of Rembrandt. This has not been corroborated, but Koninck's earlier work shows Rembrandtesque features. His landscapes are unmistakably evolved from those of Hercules Seghers. Koninck's life was uneventful. He died in Amsterdam and was buried there on 6 October, 1688.
